Sacraments of the Catholic Church

Sacrament is an outward efficacious sign instituted by Christ that bestows His transforming grace.  Each sacrament consists of a visible external rite which is composed of matter and form. The matter is the action, such as the pouring of water, and the form is the words spoken by the priest.  The purpose of the sacraments is to make people holy, build up the body of Christ, and worship God.

All the sacraments are sacred links uniting the faithful with one another and binding them to Jesus Christ, and above all, Baptism is the gate by which we enter into the Church. (CCC950)

The whole liturgical life of the Church revolves around the Eucharistic sacrifice and the sacraments. (CCC1113)

The sacraments are necessary for salvation and are the vehicles of grace that they convey.  It is through the experience of the sacramental ritual that we are infused with God’s grace, and each sacrament helps to nourish and strengthen us as they express and builds up our faith.

The Catholic Church has defined seven sacraments that were instituted by Christ and given to the Church to administer:

Sacraments of Initiation:
Baptism
Holy Eucharist
Confirmation

Sacraments of Healing:
Reconciliation
Anointing of the Sick

Sacraments of Vocation (Service):
Holy Orders
Holy Matrimony

Bautismo
Sagrada Eucaristía
Confirmación

Sacramentos de Sanación:
Reconciliación
Unción de los Enfermos

Sacramentos de Vocación (Servicio):
Orden Sacerdotal
Sacramento Matrimonial
