ALTAR SERVER

The Altar Server Ministry is a liturgical ministry in the Catholic Church in which trained members—often youth, but sometimes adults—assist the priest and deacon during the celebration of the Mass and other liturgical services.

Purpose of the Ministry

Altar servers help ensure that the liturgy is carried out smoothly, reverently, and prayerfully. Their service:

  • Supports the clergy at the altar
  • Enhances the beauty and dignity of worship
  • Encourages deeper participation in the Mass
  • Fosters vocations and spiritual growth

Main Responsibilities

Altar servers typically:

  • Carry the processional cross and candles
  • Hold the Roman Missal for the priest
  • Prepare the altar (chalice, corporal, purificator, etc.)
  • Assist during the Liturgy of the Eucharist
  • Ring bells at key moments
  • Help during special liturgies (weddings, funerals, Holy Week)

They must be attentive, reverent, and well-trained in the order of the Mass.

Who Can Serve?

Requirements vary by parish, but typically:

  • Must be a baptized Catholic
  • Have received First Holy Communion
  • Complete training sessions
  • Demonstrate commitment and reverence

Spiritual Importance

Serving at the altar is more than performing tasks, it's a sacred service. Many priests discerned their vocation while serving as altar servers. The ministry helps young people:

  • Grow in faith
  • Learn responsibility and discipline
  • Develop leadership and teamwork
  • Deepen their understanding of the Mass
