Anointing of the Sick

The Catholic Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, formerly known as Last Rites or Extreme Unction, is a ritual of healing for physical, mental, and spiritual sickness.  The sacrament consists of the anointing of the forehead and hands with blessed oil as the priest says, “Through this holy anointing may the Lord in His love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit.  May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you.”

The Catechism explains, "This sacred anointing of the sick was instituted by Christ our Lord as a true and proper sacrament of the New Testament.  The anointing of the sick conveys several graces and imparts gifts of strengthening in the Holy Spirit against anxiety, discouragement, and temptation, and conveys peace and fortitude (CCC 1520).

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is not only for those who are at the point of death.  If a sick person who received this anointing recovers his health, he can, in the case of another grave illness, receive the sacrament again.

The sacrament should be requested as soon as a serious illness is apparent and should not be delayed. Those scheduled for surgery or a hospital stay may request this sacrament before entering the hospital.
